Therapy Culture’s Assault: Is Parenting Now Considered Abuse?

For years a new professional class of therapists and self-styled trauma experts has quietly rewired our culture to treat ordinary childhood struggles as crimes against the soul, convincing a whole generation that a firm word or an old-fashioned boundary equals abuse. This isn’t compassion — it’s a moral panic dressed up as care, and it has corroded the instincts of parents and community that actually raise responsible children.

The numbers show young people are in therapy far more often than their parents were, and social media amplifies every therapy slogan into a viral doctrine about damage and victimhood. When therapy becomes the default lens through which every hurt is interpreted, whole cohorts start to view normal parenting — discipline, expectations, faith, and sacrifice — as pathological.

This isn’t a brand-new problem; history warns us. The recovered-memory craze of the 1980s and 1990s demonstrates how therapists can, with the best of intentions, manufacture trauma narratives that ruin lives and tear families apart. Conservatives have been warning that unchecked therapeutic fads create iatrogenic harm — harms caused by the healers themselves — and the record of false accusations and ruined reputations proves the danger of letting therapy occupy the moral high ground unchecked.

Worse, the internet age has given rise to armchair clinicians and TikTok therapists preaching estrangement and permanent “no contact” as a first-line solution to family conflict. Young people are being counseled to sever ties rather than to forgive, reconcile, and parent — turning normal generational friction into court-worthy trauma. This trend doesn’t empower children, it abandons them to an ideology that prizes grievance over growth.

The consequences are not theoretical: when therapeutic interventions are weaponized or outsourced to unregulated institutions and influencers, families fracture and accountability vanishes. Brave reporting has exposed cases where supposed “treatment” led to more abuse, not less, and where courts and agencies didn’t have the common-sense guardrails to protect families. Americans who believe in family, faith, and freedom should be alarmed by a system that elevates therapeutic pronouncements above parents’ lived judgments.

The remedy is straightforward and patriotic: restore parental authority, demand stricter oversight of therapeutic practices, and teach resilience instead of treating every setback as a trauma diagnosis. We should encourage real mental-health care for genuine suffering while rejecting the fashionable reduction of ordinary upbringing to abuse. It’s time to reclaim common sense for the sake of the next generation and the future of strong American families.
