Top Democrats Scramble to Defend Biden After Debate Disaster and Plunging Poll Numbers

In an unsurprising twist, more than 20 Democratic congressional leaders and governors convened in Washington, D.C., to hold President Joe Biden’s hand as he flounders in the aftermath of his catastrophic debate performance last week. Democrats trying to salvage Biden’s sinking ship is a scene from a political sitcom, where nobody has the heart to flutter the reality check.

Amid bipartisan calls for Biden to bow out of the 2024 race, the President remains stubbornly in denial, clinging to the notion that he’s still fit for the job like a dog with an old bone. Instead of heeding the nation’s increasingly louder signals, Biden used the meeting to reiterate his stubborn stance on running for another term. It’s almost as if he’s blissfully unaware of his abysmal poll numbers spiraling downward faster than a lead balloon.

For over an hour on Wednesday, Biden tried to comfort the uneasy Democrats, assuring them that he was mentally and physically in peak condition – a hard sell given his latest debate spectacle. Some Democrats chose to put a brave face on Biden’s declining health, likely in a desperate effort to save face themselves.

Hawaii Governor Josh Green, one of the many Democrats doing linguistic gymnastics to excuse Biden’s mishaps, laughably described the beleaguered President as a “healthy gentleman sharing ideas” while conveniently overlooking reality. When cornered by CNN’s Paula Newton about Biden’s reluctance to see a doctor – Biden’s last visit being way back in February – Green came up with a classic: even a physician hates going to the doctor.

The Democratic defense line has devolved into a stand-up routine, complete with the assertion that Biden is just so busy running the country that he simply can’t find time for a check-up. And then, with a sentimental flourish, Green proclaimed that the President would step down if he felt he couldn’t handle the job. Yes, because a man refusing to quit after one disastrous gaffe after another is totally going to have an epiphany any day now.

As if the situation weren’t already comical enough, Rep. Lloyd Doggett of Texas became the first House Democrat daring enough to suggest that Biden should step down. Bravo, Rep. Doggett! It only took an avalanche of polling data showing that three-quarters of Americans have serious doubts about Biden’s ability to serve another term.

The post-debate polling paints a grim picture for the Biden camp. A staggering 72 percent of voters now believe that Biden lacks the mental and cognitive fortitude to continue as President, a sharp uptick from the 65 percent earlier this month. If this trend continues, perhaps the Democrats will finally stop enabling Biden’s marathon run towards irrelevance and join Rep. Doggett in urging for a new candidate who doesn’t require a babysitting squad.
