The Treasury Department quietly finished a big step in President Donald Trump’s signature child-savings plan: automatic enrollment. In plain terms, the government has created a “Trump Account” for every eligible child with a Social Security number. The administration is calling it historic. Parents should call it an opportunity — and a reminder that the work does not stop with a bureaucratic checkbox.
What the Treasury announced
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the agency has completed automatic enrollment of eligible minors into Trump Accounts. “With automatic enrollment complete, every eligible child under the age of eighteen with a valid Social Security number now has a Trump Account,” the Treasury statement reads. Officials say the move created more than 60 million auto accounts. Temporary regulations published in the Federal Register gave the Secretary the authority to do this and laid out how accounts can be claimed.
Why this matters for families and taxpayers
The program is meant to give children a financial stake from day one. Eligible accounts can receive contributions from families, employers, donors and foundations. A one-time $1,000 pilot seed contribution is part of the plan — but families must claim the account to unlock that money. That detail matters: millions of accounts exist now “ready to be claimed,” but money will not flow unless parents verify and accept terms through the Trump Accounts app or the IRS claim process.
Real concerns: unclaimed funds, privacy and outreach
Automatic creation fixes one problem — getting accounts started — but it does not solve another: activation. Research from nonprofits and previous IRS reports show low- and moderate-income families are less likely to complete sign-ups. If parents don’t claim accounts, seed funds and future donations could sit idle. There are also privacy and data-handling questions in how Social Security and vital-records data were used to build these accounts. The Federal Register materials try to address those risks, but watchdogs and state officials will want answers.
How to claim a Trump Account — and what to do next
If you have a child with a Social Security number, check the Trump Accounts app or the IRS process (Form 4547 is the backup) and claim the account. Verify identity and relationship, accept the terms, and the account becomes active and able to receive the $1,000 pilot and future contributions. The administration deserves credit for building the rail system; now parents must take the train. And if you think Washington will magically manage outreach for every family, think again — this program will rise or fall on families, local groups, churches and schools doing the work to get kids claimed and invested in.
