Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said the move is part of a larger effort to stop improper payments before they happen, not after the money is lost.
Federal officials specified roughly $867.5 million for California and $199 million for Minnesota are being held while high-risk claims are reviewed, a stark example of the administration using new authorities to block taxpayer giveaways to dubious providers. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and HHS have emphasized a shift from the old “pay-and-chase” model to a real-time “detect-and-deploy” approach that leverages advanced tools to catch fraud early.
Finally, after years of Democrats in state capitals shrugging at fraud, Washington is acting like it actually represents taxpayers again — and conservatives should applaud. For too long bureaucrats and local power-brokers treated federal dollars like an entitlement fund for favored contractors; this deferral shows the federal government can and must exercise fiscal oversight.
This action didn’t come out of nowhere: the administration has already frozen funds and launched probes in multiple states after audits showed widespread questionable claims in home health, hospice and other services. State officials who complain about “withholding” should remember the alternative is letting criminals siphon billions from disabled seniors and vulnerable families.
Predictably, the left will paint this as partisan harassment, but the record shows major sums tied to unsupported claims and patterns that require federal intervention — taxpayers deserve more than platitudes. If the goal is affordable, honest healthcare, enforcing compliance and removing bad actors is patriotic governance, not politics.
The next step is simple: state officials should cooperate immediately, produce the required documentation, and help federal prosecutors and inspectors general dig up the rot. Conservatives must keep the pressure on — demand accountability, back officials who use their authority to protect taxpayers, and never apologize for defending the people’s money.
