Former President Donald Trump has raised concerns that the legal trials against him are biased because they are linked to President Joe Biden’s administration. This week, Matthew Colangelo, a former prosecutor under Biden, presented the prosecution’s case in Trump’s trial in New York. Trump’s supporters were quick to criticize the connection between Biden and the prosecutor, calling it a conflict of interest.
In December 2022, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg hired Colangelo as a Senior Counsel. Bragg praised Colangelo’s experience in economic justice and investigations against powerful entities. Colangelo’s previous work at the U.S. Department of Justice and New York Attorney General’s Office was highlighted as valuable for the case.
Former President Trump has been vocal about his opposition to Colangelo’s involvement in his trial due to his ties to the Biden administration. Trump criticized the prosecutor’s background, accusing him of being part of a political agenda to target him. Trump’s remarks led to a gag order issued by the judge in New York to limit his comments on the case.
During Colangelo’s presentation of the opening arguments in court, Trump denounced the trial as a coordinated effort between Washington and the New York DA’s office. Trump claimed the trial was politically motivated to damage his reputation and influence the upcoming election. Supporters echoed Trump’s sentiments on social media, questioning the independence of the prosecution and expressing disbelief at Colangelo’s role in the case.
