Trump Taps Dr. Oz To Head CMS, Aims To Revitalize US Healthcare

Donald Trump has once again shaken up the political landscape with his recent nomination of Dr. Mehmet Oz as the new administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). As the nation grapples with what many consider a healthcare crisis, Trump believes the well-known physician and former daytime talk show host is just the right person to help “Make America Healthy Again.” The nomination has sparked both enthusiasm and skepticism, particularly from those in the media who can’t seem to shake their aversion to anything Trump touches.

Dr. Oz is no stranger to public life, having spent over a decade as the host of “The Dr. Oz Show.” Before that, he rubbed elbows with the likes of Oprah Winfrey, promoting various health trends and remedies. While his experience mostly involves chatting about health on TV and dishing out advice to millions of viewers, his supporters argue that he brings a refreshing perspective to a bureaucratic position that has historically been filled with career civil servants more interested in policy than people. Why not have a heart surgeon at the helm of a healthcare agency? After all, no one could argue that the traditional bureaucratic approach has yielded great results.

Critics, however, are quick to pounce. They point out that Oz has little experience managing a large government body, which is ironic for those who champion the “swamp” as an enemy of progress. Critics also love to dredge up his Senate run against Democrat John Fetterman; by all accounts, it was a rough ride, yet it should be noted that he received Trump’s endorsement, which in itself is an accomplishment in today’s landscape. These detractors will have a tough time dismissing him as a mere TV star when Trump supporters see Red, White, and Oz—a man willing to take on entrenched interests in the healthcare industry.

In the background, some of Trump’s dissenters have churned out analysis that paints Oz’s nomination as just another bad Trump idea. They can hardly contain their disdain while reminding the public that Oz advocated for hydroxychloroquine during the pandemic, an effort that has become a lightning rod for controversy. But then again, Dr. Oz also stood up against pandemic policies that many Americans felt went too far. So one might ask: does he deserve credit or critique for at least being a voice of dissent during the health crisis?

Moreover, it’s worth highlighting that Oz will reportedly collaborate closely with Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to tackle what they call the “illness industrial complex.” This partnership could serve as a fascinating case study of how celebrity and expertise mingle in the corridors of power. After all, who better to shake things up than someone who has been in the public eye and is willing to challenge the status quo?

Of course, the media remains skeptical of this bold move. Many outlets, still stinging from Trump’s previous administration, seem inclined to dismiss Oz’s potential contributions without recognizing the substantial public support he has garnered. While they scramble to paint a doom-and-gloom picture of the nomination, conservative Americans might just see it as a rare opportunity to inject some fresh air into a stifling healthcare bureaucracy. The appointment of Dr. Oz could be exactly what the CMS needs.
