The draft resolution A/80/L.104 — driven by Togo on behalf of the African Group and the African Union — doesn’t redraw borders or force a single world map. It recommends that equal‑area projections, such as the Equal Earth projection, be used “where sizes are critical” and that educators explain the limits and choices of different projections. It’s advisory, not binding, but a 164–1–6 vote is a clear global nudge toward dethroning Mercator as the default in contexts of fairness and education.
Why cartography suddenly looks political
Mercator was brilliant for sailors in 1569 because it preserves direction, but it massively inflates land near the poles. On a Mercator map, Greenland looks comically large next to Africa — when in truth Africa covers about 30.4 million km² and Greenland about 2.16 million km², roughly a 14:1 ratio.
