That claim has ripple effects, because it asks conservatives to trade long-standing principles for short-term vote-getting. It also underestimates what voters really want: solutions that respect faith, family, and freedom.
What Christian Nationalist Leaders Are Saying
Across some conservative circles, you’re hearing a simple pitch: build big social programs inside our churches and right-leaning institutions to deliver services people need, then reap the political reward. Food, housing, healthcare-like services become tools of grassroots organizing. It sounds practical on paper — who wouldn’t want hungry families fed? — but calling it “socialism to win” is a problem. That phrase shows a willingness to borrow the techniques of the left, not to defend conservative ideals.
Why “Socialism to Win” Won’t Work
First, it’s a branding disaster. Conservatives spent decades standing against socialist promises of free stuff paid for by someone else. Now we’re asked to repackage those offers as “compassion” and hope no one notices. Second, big government-style approaches invite dependency and bureaucratic creep. Churches and local groups should lift people, not become delivery arms for politics. And third, politics corrupts mission. When aid is tied to votes or loyalty, trust evaporates. Voters can see the difference between genuine charity and a campaign tactic — and many will resent the manipulation.
A Better Conservative Strategy
Conservatives can help families without signing up for socialism. Strengthen faith-based charities, yes, but keep them independent. Push school choice so parents have power over their kids’ futures. Promote economic-growth policies that create jobs and higher wages instead of new entitlement structures. Fight for simpler regulations, stronger local institutions, and incentives for private giving. That’s grassroots organizing with backbone, not a cover for state-style control.
At the end of the day, winning shouldn’t mean losing our soul. Republicans don’t need to copy the left to win votes — they need to offer real, liberty-respecting solutions that help people get ahead. If leaders want power, fine. But if they want a conservative movement that lasts, they’ll stop pitching “socialism to win” and start pitching freedom that actually works.
