In recent news, Al Sharpton has made some outlandish accusations against Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida. In a speech at the National Action Network’s 2023 convention, Sharpton claimed that the governor was using Jim Crow-type tactics to wage a war on certain aspects of history.

While this claim may sound dramatic to some, it is clear that Governor DeSantis is simply looking out for the best interest of Florida’s students and parents. In March of 2022, DeSantis signed legislation that protects parental rights similar to HR 5. This legislation came in response to a growing number of lawsuits across the country dealing with the social transitions of children in schools.
DeSantis has also taken steps to allow parents to object to certain materials in school curricula. This move comes in response to growing concerns from parents about the use of critical race theory in schools. Critical race theory teaches that America is fundamentally racist and requires people to view every social interaction and person in terms of race.
Parents across the country have voiced their disdain over the use of books with sexually explicit content in schools. In response, some states have taken action to remove them from schools. House Republicans have also introduced legislation at the federal level to address this issue, which was passed on March 24th of this year.
Despite these reasonable and necessary measures taken by Governor DeSantis, Sharpton and the Education Secretary, Miguel Cardona, have chosen to use inflammatory language to fuel their political agenda. It is irresponsible and dangerous to throw around claims of racism and Jim Crow tactics without any evidence to support these claims.
It is important to remember that Governor DeSantis and the Department of Education are responsible for protecting the safety and well-being of Florida’s students. It is not a “war on history” to ensure that children are not subjected to explicit content or harmful curriculum in schools. We should support Governor DeSantis and his efforts to protect parental rights and ensure that our schools are providing a safe and healthy learning environment for our children.
