The Biden administration is once again trying to circumvent the student loan system by hiding information from the public. The administration's latest move will let student loan recipients avoid the repayment obligation, but it will put a strain on the taxpayers.
The heads of three House Republican committees revealed that the Department of Education quietly decided to allow student loan recipients to avoid the repayment obligation by not requiring them to provide proof of their income. In a letter to Miguel Cardona, the Education Secretary, House Republicans warned that the department's decision to relax the requirements for income verification for income-driven repayment plans would put the taxpayers at risk.
Due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 disease and the suspension of student loan repayment, the Biden administration decided that it would not require loan recipients to provide tax documents to verify their income.

In their letter to Cardona, the Republican members of the House Oversight Committee warned him about the potential effects of the administration's decision on the student loan program. They noted that the committee had already conducted two hearings regarding the issue of fraud and improper payments related to the COVID-19 outbreak.
According to the Comptroller General, the implementation of the Income-Driven Repayment plans did not ensure that the individuals who reported zero income were actually working. As a result, House Republican leaders asked the Education Department to provide them with a detailed briefing on its legal authority to relax the requirements for income verification. They also requested that the department explain how it would prevent fraud in the future.
The members of the committee demanded that the Biden administration take responsibility for the disastrous student loan program that it created. They also demanded that the administration be more transparent regarding its decisions.
