In a recent appearance on Meet the Press, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and Biden campaign national co-chair Mitch Landrieu defended President Joe Biden against the findings of Special Counsel Robert Hur’s report on the mishandling of classified documents. The special counsel had determined that Biden’s memory is “significantly limited,” prompting Mayorkas and Landrieu to slam Hur’s comments as “gratuitous” and “unnecessary.”
Mayorkas emphasized the special counsel’s role in investigating and applying the law, insisting that Hur’s personal remarks about Biden were improper. Mayorkas also highlighted the president’s sharpness, intensity, and focus, claiming he takes extensive measures to prepare for interactions with Biden due to his detail-oriented nature.
Joining Mayorkas in defending Biden, Landrieu criticized Hur for adding “ad hominem, gratuitous attacks” about the president’s mental capacity. Landrieu expressed his admiration for Biden, describing him as tough, smart, and on his game. According to Landrieu, the notion that Biden is unfit for his role is simply “a bucket of b.s. that’s so deep your boots would get stuck in it.”
Furthermore, Landrieu claimed that Hur’s report concluded that the president had engaged in no wrongdoing and dismissed any concerns about Biden’s readiness for the job. This comes despite the report’s findings of mishandling classified information by Biden, although it did not result in criminal charges.
Mayorkas and Landrieu’s remarks come amidst calls from more than a dozen Republicans to invoke the 25th Amendment in an attempt to remove Biden from office. However, Mayorkas denied any discussions among the Cabinet members regarding voting to remove the president.
Vice President Kamala Harris and former Attorney General Eric Holder also labeled Hur’s characterization of Biden’s mental state as “gratuitous,” with Harris suggesting it was politically motivated. This collective defense of Biden’s mental capacity reflects a unified effort among high-ranking officials within the Biden administration to discredit the findings of the special counsel report.
