Gloria Steinem told the audience that real equality won’t arrive “until men are fathers and are raising infants and little children as much as women are,” pushing the idea that household labor must be split evenly to achieve social progress. That line, delivered on the Forbes stage, neatly sums up the modern feminist script: if private choices don’t conform to a public ideal, the state and culture must nudge them until they do.
Listening to millionaires and social elites lecture about “dividing work at home” from a luxury resort in Abu Dhabi exposes the distance between their worldview and the daily lives of hardworking Americans. Many families juggle two paychecks, inflexible schedules, and the costs of raising children — and they deserve respect for the choices they make, not a one-size-fits-all moralizing from coastal and global elites.
This isn’t a plea against men stepping up or sharing in parenting — responsibility and care are virtues every family should encourage — but it is a warning about cultural imperialism disguised as progress. Conservatives believe policies should strengthen families and expand choices — affordable childcare options, tax relief, and workplace flexibility — not punish or shame those who choose traditional caregiving roles.
Americans should hear these elite pronouncements and ask a simple question: who wins when cultural mandarins prescribe domestic life? Instead of marching to the drumbeat of performative virtue from afar, citizens should demand policies that preserve family autonomy, reward hard work, and respect the full range of parenting choices at home and at work.
