Some experts say that driving in an electric vehicle (EV) can make passengers feel sick, while others suggest that the absence of sound in an EV may contribute to motion sickness. Dr. D.J. Verret, an ear, nose, and throat doctor in Texas, believes that motion sickness in EVs is a real issue. He explained that the auditory and visual cues in an EV don’t align with the brain’s expectations of movement, which can lead to feelings of dizziness and discomfort, especially for passengers.
Ed Kim, an analyst, called out Teslas as the “worst offenders,” noting that they can be jerky and abrupt. John Voelcker, a contributing editor at Car and Driver, added that abrupt acceleration and braking in EVs can also contribute to motion sickness. Matt Farah, an editor at Road & Track, mentioned that the way an EV delivers power and the absence of sound can make passengers feel dizzy when traveling at higher speeds.

A study from Vrije University in the Netherlands published in 2020 found that informative auditory cues can help mitigate car sickness. The study suggested that being able to anticipate upcoming motion, with the help of sound, could reduce sickness resulting from movement, such as in the case of autonomous vehicles.
Despite these expert opinions, an Instagram poster claimed to have experienced multiple symptoms linked to her EV, including fatigue, shoulder and neck pain, nosebleeds, nausea, and hair loss. While it is not certain that the car caused these symptoms, the poster reported that the symptoms subsided after selling the vehicle.
