Senator Marsha Blackburn from Tennessee has made some alarming claims about the southern border crisis. She argued that unaccompanied minors from the southern border are being exploited for labor and sex trafficking. This follows on from concerns raised by whistleblowers that the Biden administration overlooked warnings of such dangers occurring. The New York Times reported that the Department of Labor had launched an investigation into the snack industry over child labor violations in February.
Blackburn believes that over 85,000 children have disappeared since they first crossed the southern border. With over 250,000 unaccompanied alien children in the United States, this missing number troubles the senator deeply. She voiced her concerns on Fox News, stating that she is worried that the children are being used, “for labor or putting them into gangs or for sex trafficking.”
This modern-day slavery must stop, Blackburn claims. Children who are sent to individuals, who then exploit them or traffic them, underscores the gravity of the border crisis. From Fox News reporting, we know that U.S Customs and Border Patrol encountered over 2.3 million migrants in the fiscal year 2022. Another 600,000 migrants evaded the CBP that fiscal year.
In October of 2022, Border Patrol encountered 230,000 people. The next month, November, over 233,470 people were encountered, and in December 2022, more than 250,000 people encountered them. These figures clearly indicate that the southern border crisis continues to escalate.
Senator Charles Grassley warned the Obama administration in 2015 that unaccompanied minors were also victims of exploitation. Additionally, The Department of Health and Human Services has not commented on this issue that concerns millions of American conservatives.
This crisis is alarming, and the Biden administration must step up its efforts to safeguard helpless unaccompanied minors. Young, vulnerable children must not be exploited as modern-day slaves or for any other nefarious purposes.
