GOP to Investigate Bud Light For Marketing Booze to Children

Bud Light has found itself in hot water as Republican lawmakers call for an investigation into the company’s partnership with transgender activist Dylan Mulvaney. Concerns have been raised about whether Anheuser-Busch has marketed its products to individuals who are underage. Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Senator Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) sent a joint letter to Anheuser-Busch CEO Brendan Whitworth and the Beer Institute’s Code Compliance Review Board, urging them to investigate whether the partnership violated the Advertising/Marketing Code and Buying Guidelines, prohibiting marketing to those below the legal drinking age.

Mulvaney’s series, “Days of Girlhood,” had a skewed audience that was significantly younger than the legal drinking age, which should have been a red flag to the company. The senators said Mulvaney’s content had targeted young people, and they gave various examples from his videos in the letter. Therefore, the senators called on Anheuser-Busch to publicly apologize for marketing alcoholic beverages to minors, publicly sever its relationship with Mulvaney, and direct him to remove any Anheuser-Busch content from his social media platforms.

Cruz and Blackburn also requested that Anheuser-Busch provide documentation on its vetting process for partnerships and how the company failed to assess the appropriateness of working with Mulvaney. The lawmakers requested the documents by May 31, 2023, stating that the company’s failure to do due diligence when selecting influencers warrants congressional oversight.

It is infuriating to see corporations like Anheuser-Busch, with a history of producing and distributing one of America’s most beloved beverages, partner with individuals like Mulvaney to market their products to minors. It is troubling that our youth may be subjected to such content and influenced to drink alcohol. We can only hope that the Beer Institute and Anheuser-Busch take this investigation seriously and take action to stop such partnerships in the future.
