Representatives James Comer and Jim Jordan are spearheading the effort, seeking all records connecting Hunter Biden to the SEC's 2016 investigation, which resulted in fraud charges against seven individuals.
The lawmakers have raised concerns about the SEC's handling of the case, particularly highlighting that Hunter Biden's attorney requested confidentiality during the investigation, citing the potential impact on then-Vice President Joe Biden. According to the Republicans, this incident exemplifies a pattern of Hunter Biden leveraging his father's position for personal gain. They also pointed out that the SEC’s press release announcing the charges against the seven individuals did not mention Hunter Biden, which they find suspicious.

The investigation is linked to a 2016 subpoena Hunter Biden received from the SEC for documents related to Rosemont Seneca Bohai, a company implicated in the fraud investigation. Despite testimony from his former business partner implicating him as the “corporate secretary” of the company, Hunter Biden was not charged in the scheme. Republicans argue that Hunter Biden’s use of his father's position to seek confidentiality during the investigation raises concerns about potential favoritism and special treatment.
