Morehouse College to Halt Commencement if Pro-Hamas Protests Disrupt Biden Speech

Morehouse College President David A. Thomas announced that any disruptions during President Biden’s commencement speech by pro-Hamas demonstrators could lead to the immediate cancellation of all ceremonies. He stressed that the College would not tolerate any behavior that hinders the smooth proceeding of the ceremony, including prolonged shouting. However, Thomas assured that police would not remove disruptive students using zip ties.

Thomas emphasized his readiness to halt the ceremonies instantly if necessary, preferring a failed commencement over compromising the event's integrity. He noted that while not all forms of protest would be banned, they must not disturb others from participating and celebrating the occasion.

The commencement will feature police barricades, heightened law enforcement presence, metal detectors, and additional security measures, underscoring the need to maintain order. This decision reflects the College’s commitment to preserving the integrity and peaceful conduct of the ceremonies, ensuring that all attendees can safely enjoy the event. The announcement comes amid a wave of campus protests demanding divestment from Israel, part of a broader trend of student activism.
