In a shocking and divisive statement, MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough accused Texas Governor Greg Abbott of “killing little children every day” during his “Morning Joe” broadcast on Tuesday. The statement was made in response to the recent mass shooting at an outlet mall in Allen, Texas, which left eight people dead and seven others injured.

Scarborough’s comments were made during a panel discussion on gun control, during which Reverend Al Sharpton claimed that there are “more guns than people” in the United States. Scarborough then went on to criticize Abbott for not doing enough to keep Texans safe.

Unfortunately, Scarborough’s accusations are completely unfounded and do nothing to address the real issue at hand: the need for stricter gun control laws. It is true that Texas has some of the most lax gun laws in the country, but Governor Abbott is not solely responsible for this. The Republican-controlled state legislature has been blocking any attempts to pass meaningful gun control legislation for years, and it is their inaction that is truly responsible for the deaths of innocent Texans.
Furthermore, Scarborough’s comments ignore the fact that the gunman in Saturday’s massacre was killed by an Allen Police Department officer who was at the mall on an unrelated call. This indicates that the shooter was acting alone, and that the tragedy could have been prevented if he had not been able to obtain a gun in the first place.
It is also important to note that federal officials are currently looking into whether the gunman expressed an interest in white supremacist ideology, as well as whether he had a patch on his chest that read “RWDS” (Right Wing Death Squad), which is popular among right-wing extremists and white supremacy groups. This indicates that the shooter may have been motivated by something other than lax gun laws.
