Governor Gavin Newsom of the Left Coast, known for his slick public image and big political dreams, is in hot water once again. But this time, it’s not about his usual disastrous policies—it’s about baseball. Yup, you heard that right, folks. The governor has been spinning yarns about his supposed baseball career at Santa Clara University and being drafted by the Texas Rangers. Sounds like a real homerun story, right? Well, not so fast.
CalMatters, the watchdogs over at the non-profit news organization, took a closer look and found some major league discrepancies in Newsom’s tale. Turns out, his baseball glory days might be more fiction than fact. Surprise, surprise.

It all came to a head back in 2004 when Newsom, then the freshly-minted mayor of San Francisco, strutted his stuff at the San Francisco Giants’ home opener. The announcer went on and on about Newsom’s fantastic baseball feats at Santa Clara University and getting drafted by the Rangers. But hold up, folks. Something just doesn’t add up.
According to former coaches and teammates, Newsom’s involvement in Santa Clara’s baseball scene was more like a foul ball than a home run. There’s no official record of him playing in any games for the university, and his time on the team barely made it past the warm-up. Sounds like someone struck out big time.
But wait, there’s more. It turns out that Newsom’s fast track to Santa Clara might have had less to do with his fastball and more to do with his father’s well-placed connections. Surprise, surprise—another case of the elites pulling strings to get ahead.
Despite the mounting evidence against him, Newsom’s office is standing firm, claiming the governor never exaggerated his baseball prowess. Sure, and pigs fly, right? The governor’s narrative of overcoming challenges through sports is sounding more like a tall tale than an underdog victory.
Guess Newsom’s story about baseball is like his promises—a lot of hype and not much substance. Looks like he struck out on this one, trying to run bases he never even touched.
