The Speaker of the House, Mike Johnson (R-LA), has indicated that the House will hold a vote on Saturday night to decide on a foreign aid package, which will include billions of dollars in aid for Ukraine. The aid package will be a part of three bills that aim to provide support for America’s national security interests and allies, such as Israel, the Indo-Pacific, and Ukraine. Additionally, a fourth bill will consolidate the “REPO Act, TikTok bill, sanctions, and other measures to confront Russia, China, and Iran” into a single rule. This will give the House the option to vote on all four bills together or none at all, in a strategic move by Speaker Johnson.

Speaker Johnson’s plan is to combine the Ukraine funding with aid for Israel and Taiwan, as well as other legislative measures, all under one rule. By doing this, he hopes to gain support from both Democrats and Republicans, while also protecting his position as Speaker of the House. However, some conservatives, like Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), have expressed opposition to Johnson’s strategy, arguing that it prioritizes aid to Ukraine over other crucial issues such as border security.
Rep. Greene pointed out that the House previously passed a bill for aid to Israel, but the Senate did not follow through. She also noted that the Speaker had previously voted against providing $300 million for Ukraine. With the upcoming vote, she and other conservatives are questioning why Ukraine is now the top priority for such a substantial amount of aid. They believe Speaker Johnson is overly reliant on Democratic support, which is causing division within the Republican party.
