Connecticut is facing a lawsuit by a former high school athlete, Chelsea Mitchell, as the state’s policies allow males who identify as transgender women to compete in women’s sports. The lawsuit is based on the belief that Title IX protections are being violated. Mitchell, who lost over 20 races during her high school track career, is determined to make sure other young women do not have to face the same torment. Along with her, three other former Connecticut high school runners are suing the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference to overturn the ridiculous transgender athlete policy.

Mitchell is not just any ordinary athlete; she is one of the state’s fastest women track runners. In 2016, she broke two school records during her first track meet. She was determined to win a state championship and go to college on a track scholarship. Unfortunately, her aspirations were thwarted as she was forced to compete against a male-bodied athlete. The transgender athlete knocked her out of qualifying for the subsequent round. Finally, it became apparent that two male-bodied athletes were continuously defeating females in the track championships.

The fact that male-bodied athletes have been allowed to participate in female sports competitions is a severe insult to natural-born women’s athletic achievements. In 2020, a male swimmer who claims to be a transgender woman and identified as ‘Will Lia Thomas, participated in the women’s swim team at the University of Pennsylvania, unfairly taking away the Division I Title from deserving female athletes. It is an obvious biological advantage that males hold over females. With Connecticut’s policy, female athletes are being robbed of almost any opportunity to excel in sport competitions.
Mitchell believes it is essential to give a voice to her story and help other young girls avoid this whole ordeal. The Alliance Defending Freedom also published her opinion piece in USA Today, noting that editors changed her original words to ‘transgender’ without her consent, apologizing for the supposed ‘hurtful language.’ What liberal media outlets, feminists, and some portion of the progressive left argue is not only incorrect and unfair but downright preposterous. They argue that gender is a social construct and, therefore, males competing with females, which would be unthinkable till a decade ago, is now welcomed.
It is long overdue that Americans understand the distinction between transgender rights and natural-born rights. The transgender movement has indeed muddied the waters by insisting that transgender rights are the same as human rights. But they are not. It’s easy to make gender completely arbitrary in all aspects of life, but it’s another to do it in sports competition. Anyone would acknowledge that males have on average more muscle mass than females. That’s why the sports world has separate leagues for men and women. Chelsea Mitchell and other young female athletes should not have to compete with male-bodied competitors and then see their opportunities washed away because of flawed policies.
