Recently, liberal media outlets got excited about secret recordings of Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito and Chief Justice John Roberts, made by a progressive activist, Lauren Windsor. These recordings were taken at a private dinner hosted by the Supreme Court Historical Society. In the recordings, Alito agrees with the idea of fighting for godly values in the country. He also expresses the difficulty in finding compromise on fundamental issues in the country. Roberts, on the other hand, disagrees with the assertion that the Supreme Court should be guiding the country as a “Christian nation.”
Conservatives immediately dismissed the recordings as “pure clickbait” and found that nothing inappropriate was said by Alito and Roberts. Carrie Severino of the Judicial Crisis Network stated that it’s clear that the Supreme Court’s role is not to make policy, a point both justices emphasized in the recordings. Senator Mike Lee also echoed this sentiment, calling it a “gotcha” moment by progressives.

Even those on the left had reservations about the recordings. “The View” co-host Joy Behar expressed concern about the manner in which the recordings were obtained, comparing it to the work of Project Veritas. Sunny Hostin, another co-host, was uncomfortable with the release of “snippets of tape recordings without consent, being taken out of context.”
In the end, both conservatives and some on the left saw the recordings as much ado about nothing. The conservative perspective is that the comments made by the justices were respectful and not at all improper. These recordings were seen as an attempt by progressives to discredit the integrity of the Supreme Court.
