The State Department has landed in hot water for its decision to award a hefty $1 million grant to support investigations into alleged human rights abuses in Israel. This news has sparked outrage among Republican lawmakers, who see it as a direct attack on the Jewish state. Emails obtained by the conservative America First Legal Foundation have shed light on the controversy, exposing private dissent within the agency over the decision.

The Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor’s announcement of the grant in February 2022 drew sharp criticism from conservative circles. It sparked backlash due to concerns that the grant was singling out Israel, a key ally of the United States, for scrutiny. One State Department official expressed disbelief at the decision, questioning why the agency would allocate funds to collect evidence of human rights abuses in a country that is a close ally, rather than focusing on countries with well-documented histories of human rights abuses.
Furthermore, another official, whose name was redacted, accused their colleagues of being in denial and willfully ignoring the reality of the situation. They pointed out that previous investigatory grants were directed at countries with clear records of human rights abuses, such as Syria and Libya, not at a steadfast ally like Israel.
The revelation of these internal emails has only deepened the controversy surrounding the grant. Reed Rubinstein, senior counselor and oversight director for America First Legal, lambasted President Joe Biden for allegedly misusing millions of taxpayer dollars to subsidize Palestinian terrorism and for resuming aid to Gaza, which is controlled by Hamas. The decision to restart aid to Gaza has prompted additional scrutiny from GOP lawmakers, especially in light of the U.S. government’s veto of a U.N. resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in the Middle East.
