ACLU and Left-Wing Groups Sue Biden Admin Over New Asylum Restrictions at Southern Border

In recent news, some groups that support illegal immigrants taking action against the Biden administration over its recent directive that restricts how many asylum claims can be processed at the southern border. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and other organizations, such as the Las Americas Immigrant Advocacy Center and the Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services (RAICES), filed a lawsuit on this matter.

These groups argue that the new policy, which prevents asylum for migrants who do not arrive at specified entry points, goes against existing federal immigration laws. They maintain that the United States has a history of providing refuge to those fleeing from persecution and that the new directive violates this national commitment.

Earlier this month, President Biden released guidance on border security, which included limitations on granting asylum to individuals crossing the southern border illegally, unless they have “exceptionally compelling circumstances”. Additionally, the order limits border access when daily encounters between official ports of entry reach a certain threshold.

In response to this development, the Biden administration has recently taken measures that some view as granting “mass amnesty” to hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants.

The viewpoint among conservative Republicans is that illegal immigration should be strongly and properly regulated, and that President Biden’s recent actions may lead to far-reaching consequences for the nation’s security and sovereignty.
