The race for the Senate in Utah in 2024 is expected to be a Republican one, as the party has a solid stronghold in the state. With the map already favoring them, it is anybody's guess who will be the nominee. Mitt Romney, who is seeking his old Senate seat, has already filed paperwork to run again. Riverton Mayor Trent Staggs is the first candidate to officially challenge him.
The mayor of a city in Massachusetts has been vocal about his disdain for the senator. He has criticized his time in politics and moved to Utah.
In his announcement, Staggs talked about how Washington works and how each compromise costs trillions. He also noted that the US is now over $31.6 trillion in debt. He then criticized the government's actions, such as the overabundance of IRS agents and the funds going to Ukraine.
In his video statement, Staggs criticized Romney, saying that he only fought for the establishment and wokeness, among other things.
As a child, Staggs watched his parents struggle with their teacher salary. He noted that he was able to cut down on government spending and innovate to lower the costs of government as the mayor of Riverton. He also refused to implement lockdowns or mask mandates during the pandemic. He said that he wanted his children to have the same opportunities he did.
To reach out to voters, Staggs has set up a campaign website where he can talk about his vision for the country. He stated that he would create a smaller government and a stronger economy by scrapping the regulations and allowing people to freely move around the country. He also criticized Romney's support for open borders and the massive deficits.
In his statement, Staggs said that he was running for the Senate because he believes that "enough is enough." He noted that he has been able to cut spending and improve the services of the Riverton community while also driving economic growth.
