Cardinal Wilton Gregory of Washington, D.C., didn’t hold back in his recent critique of President Joe Biden, slamming him as a “cafeteria Catholic” who picks and chooses which teachings of the Church to follow. The cardinal made it clear that he believes Biden is cherry-picking his beliefs, particularly on issues such as abortion rights and transgender visibility, to align with the Democratic Party’s platform.

Speaking on Face the Nation, Cardinal Gregory pointed out that Biden, as a Catholic, actively supports policies such as expanded abortion rights, gay marriage, and gender-affirming care, all of which directly contradict the teachings of the Catholic Church. The cardinal suggested that Biden is being insincere in his faith by selectively highlighting certain aspects of Catholicism while blatantly disregarding others.
Cardinal Gregory didn’t mince words, stating, “There is a phrase that we have used in the past, a ‘cafeteria Catholic.’ You choose that which is attractive, and dismiss that which is challenging.” This scathing remark highlights the cardinal’s belief that Biden is conveniently ignoring fundamental Catholic principles to suit his political agenda.
Furthermore, the cardinal criticized Biden’s approach to the issue of abortion, particularly calling out the president’s use of the term “Restore Roe” during his State of the Union address. He expressed disdain for Biden’s executive order aimed at streamlining abortion access and condemned the president’s administration for prioritizing reproductive healthcare services, including access to abortion, over the protection of unborn lives.
In a similar vein, Archbishop William Lori of Baltimore, chairman of the Bishops’ Committee on Pro-Life Activities, echoed Cardinal Gregory’s sentiments, urging the president and all elected officials to prioritize support and care for mothers and babies rather than facilitating the destruction of unborn human beings.
The conservative perspective on the matter is clear: Cardinal Gregory and Archbishop Lori are unapologetically critical of President Biden’s approach to issues such as abortion and LGBTQ+ rights, arguing that his stance directly conflicts with Catholic teachings. From their vantage point, Biden’s selective adherence to Catholic doctrine, particularly on contentious social issues, is not only insincere but also poses a direct challenge to fundamental moral principles. At its core, this controversy underscores a stark ideological clash between the Democratic Party’s progressive agenda and conservative Catholic values.
