Biden Rules Could Spell End for Coal Power in U.S.

On Thursday, the Biden administration announced some new rules about coal power plants, and CNN’s Chief Climate Correspondent Bill Weir had much to say about it. Weir thinks this is a really big deal because the new rules mean the end of coal as a power source in the United States. He said there aren’t any fancy technologies out there that can follow all these rules, so it’s going to shut down most of the remaining coal-fired plants in the country.

Weir talked about how the new rules are going to cut down on things like mercury and coal ash pollution, which is great, but the really tough one is this new rule that says coal-fired plants have to cut 90% of their pollution. He doesn’t think there’s any way for them to do that. He also mentioned that a quarter of these plants were already planning to retire, so it’s even worse news for the ones still chugging along.

The thing is, coal is a pretty big deal for a lot of people. It’s been a major source of power in the U.S. for a long time, and a lot of jobs depend on it. So, these new rules are going to be a big change for the folks in the coal industry. They’ll have to find new ways to make power or maybe even find new jobs altogether.

With all this talk about cutting back on coal, the Biden administration is pushing for more clean energy options. But for the folks who rely on coal, this is a pretty tough blow. It’ll be interesting to see how things play out with these new rules and what it means for the future of power in the U.S.
